Accessibility Devices

All South Shore Cinemas locations are equipped with closed captioning, descriptive narration and assistive listening devices. These devices are intended to make the experience enjoyable and accessible for our deaf, hard of hearing, blind and visually impaired moviegoers. The devices are available for films that are encoded with captions or descriptions. We will provide these devices upon request from the theater box office for no charge. You will be requested to leave an ID to ensure return of the device after the movie.

Closed Captioning Device (CC)
These devices offer personal monitors with digital text displays that easily attach to cup holder armrests and allow the user to adjust the monitor to their preferred position. The devices are completely wireless and simple to use.  Please inquire at the theatre box office to see if your movie is available with Closed Captioning.

Audio Description Headset (AD)
Moviegoers who are visually impaired can receive additional audio narration with their personal audio description headset. The headsets provide the user with additional description of the visual setting and a description of what is taking place on the screen.  The devices are wireless and simple to use.  Please inquire at the theatre box office to see if your movie is available with Audio Description.

Assisted Listening Device (ALD)
Patrons who are partially hearing impaired can adjust the movie soundtrack volume through their personal ALD. The devices are wireless headsets that receive an infrared signal that allow the user to customize the volume to their liking.

The Cameo is a great place to host a birthday party or other special event. We are happy to work with you in advance to plan a party. Please email us if you are interested. Thank you.

Cameo History

The Cameo Theater was designed by architects William Luther Mowll and Roger Glade Rand, and built in 1939. In keeping with the local colonial architecture of Boston's South Shore, the designers recalled the essential elements of design that enter into the ensemble of Old Colony homesteads. The owners of the Cameo wanted to give as much local color and atmosphere as possible, attempting to make their patrons feel as "at home" as possible. Much of the original treatment is still in place.

The lounge/lobby area is more like an old New England parlor than a part of a modern theater. It is a colonial room with a fireplace, paneled walls, and glazed Chinese red wall paper. Originally, the Cameo was a single theater with 672 seats. It had a large screen for cinematic events and a stage for live events. The stage area was flanked by two large fluted columns with Doric capitals. Cameo StageThe auditorium walls used four-by-four foot squares of natural colored wallboard, stenciled to imitate Chinese wallpaper.

When the theater was converted to a twin in the 1980's, the walls were lined with conservative red drapes and consistent white paneling.

Patriot Cinemas operated the Cameo Theater for nearly 40 years until December 31, 2010. On January 1, 2011, South Shore Cinemas began operations at the theater, hoping to maintain a cinema tradition that has been important to the area for generations. South Shore Cinemas is a family-owned company.
